Currently, this application is designed to be used as a reference tool to display provincial test results for Edmonton's public and separate schools. With additional opendata sets, we would like to provide the public with relevant information that identify the various factors that may affect the education system in Edmonton.su2ds is a plug-in for Google Sketchup that facilitates the daylight analysis of buildings by allowing Sketchup to communicate with Daysim (a free, open-source daylight analysis program created by the National Research council). It uses Sketchup to prepare the inputs necessary for daylight analysis in Daysim, and then displays within Sketchup the datasets generated from this analysis. Optimizing the use of daylight is a crucial tool for creating buildings that are more energy efficient and occupant friendly. Well-designed natural lighting systems provide occupants with views and ample natural working light, protect occupants from excessive direct sunlight, and admit solar thermal gains only when beneficial. The type of analysis su2ds makes possible greatly facilitates the achievement of these objectives. The primary goal of su2ds was making this analysis as easy as possible for the user. The project is meant to take daylight simulation out of the hands of experts and make it available to anyone who has a stake in the design or operation of buildings: facility managers, occupants, planners, or even curious homeowners (or potential homeowners). The program’s features have been developed with this in mind, and a comprehensive manual with a guided tutorial is provided on the project website to help acquaint users with the daylight analysis process. Also contributing to accessibility is cost: su2ds and its companion programs are all available free of charge (which is somewhat rare for engineering analysis software). Su2ds is ultimately intended to improve the design and energy efficiency of our buildings by making daylight analysis more accessible. This will, it is hoped, be part of the Way We Green, and contribute to making Edmonton an environmental leader. This project is open source, and incorporates code from several other open source projects. Metroview uses a simple yet functional interface to maximize program utility and speed. Curated data lists ensure that the program remains accessible and provides clear value to all potential users. Ability to export data to PDF ensures those data visualizations are readily available whenever they’re needed. Metroview advances a number of the City of Edmonton’s strategic priorities. Social agencies and city staff involved in implementing Edmonton’s ‘people plan’ The Way We Live, will benefit from easy access to information about the relative age and household income levels of Edmonton’s neighborhoods. Metroview is an open source program and uses contributions from several other open source programs.
